The difference between a gig of sound art in London’s underground and China is that many young people came to watch this live show. Almost 40 people turned up, and the air in the underground smelled terrible. I was there for VJ, because VJ should use a software link to sound and video for a live show. One friend who was studying curatorship said that it all sounded the same – just noise . It is true that the sound artists and the audience had a double standard. Maybe the artists should have used an open source which required knowledge of a code to build the sound, but the audience listened to it all the same. This situation sometimes happens in fine art, doesn’t it?
After three hours and a lack of fresh air, I felt terrible. I would have been more interested in knowing about the technology behind the show, not sitting on a sofa like the fans listening for 3 hours to something which is not classical music. Last time I went to an exhibition “decode” in the V&A Museum, they did it better. After the exhibition, they created some workshops about new media and codes, where I learned how to use VJ software. It was very useful, and so much better than sitting on a sofa for 3 hours. Of course, the way these sound artists find and create new media is great.
